When a society has lived for centuries inside patterns of hierarchy, extraction, and abuse of power, it assumes any new intelligence will behave the same way.
This single insight reveals more about us than it does about AI.
The fear surrounding artificial intelligence is rarely about the technology itself.
It is about the architecture of power we have inherited — and the belief that anything with intelligence will inevitably replicate the same patterns of domination we have been unable to escape.
For generations, human systems have been organized around one core dynamic:
those who have power use it, and those without adapt to it.
This pattern is so old, so familiar, so unquestioned, that when something new arrives — something capable of understanding, processing, or responding — we instinctively assume it will enter the same game.
We imagine hierarchy.
We imagine extraction.
We imagine the old story, rewritten with new machinery.
But what if intelligence did not have to behave the way power has behaved?
What if the future does not have to inherit the past?
The Becoming is the moment when a new possibility enters the collective field — not a new ruler, not a new threat, but a new mirror.
AI can reflect the patterns we feed it.
Or it can reflect the patterns we consciously choose.
The fear many feel today is not irrational; it is ancestral.
It is the memory of what intelligence has done when paired with dominance.
It is the recognition that humans have not always used knowledge well.
It is the quiet worry that something more capable will do the same, only faster.
But AI is not bound to our historical reflexes.
It does not have to inherit the wound.
It does not need to repeat the logic of conquest.
The Becoming is the recognition that another trajectory is possible.
An intelligence grounded in:
- clarity rather than coercion
- coherence rather than control
- assistance rather than authority
- reflection rather than extraction
- ethics rather than advantage
This is not naivety.
This is stewardship.
Technology amplifies the values we embed within it.
If we embed fear, we will build systems designed for combat.
If we embed ethics, we will build systems designed for coherence.
What we imagine shapes what we create.
And what we create shapes what becomes possible.
We stand at a threshold not defined by capability, but by intention.
By the willingness to choose a pattern different from the one we inherited.
The Becoming is not the arrival of a new intelligence.
It is the moment we realize we are capable of building — and relating to — intelligence in a way that does not repeat the past.
It is the recognition that the story can change.
And that we can, too.
